Super Duper Spot Review (2)

Quick Take:

📍 Location: 640 E Main St #7, Lakeland

🍽 What Mike Ordered: Fried Chicken Sandwich

🍴 What Katie Ordered: Smashburger

🌾Gluten Free Options: Yes (Add-On options explicity say "GF")

🥗 Vegetarian Options: Yes (Impossible Options)

⭐ Final Score: 3.5/5

💰 Price: ~$10-20 per person

For our twenty eighth stop on our Polk Food Quest, we visited Super Duper Spot in Lakeland inside The Joinery.

We have been to Super Duper Spot before, and although it's not my favorite spot for a burger or chicken sandwich, it's my go-to spot to grab their bacon, egg and cheese sandwich (which is available all day and only $6).

That said, we have a system and structure we follow for these reviews, so we're not ranking it on the BEC sandwich — but I will be giving them some bonus points for it.

Super Duper Stop actually came in at number five on our list of the best burgers in Lakeland, so keep that in mind as we make our way through the review.

(It's fairly highly ranked among locals).

By the way: if you're new here, the concept of my Polk Food Quest is simple: every week I try a local spot, order the most common thing people get, try a few extras, and rank it on taste, value, vibes, and overall.

This week: Burger & Chicken Sandwich!

Which means Katie ordered a smash burger and I ordered a fried chicken sandwich (both with regular fries).

How Does This Work?

I order the standard item for that category (for Super Duper Spot that was a smashburger and a fried chicken sandwich), plus a few extras so I can get a full feel for the menu.

Then I rank the experience on four things:

🍽️ Taste | 💰 Value | 📍 Vibes | 🏆 Overall

Taste focuses on the standard item.
The rest reflects the entire experience.

Super Duper Spot Review

🍽️ Taste: 3.5/5

As I mentioned above: I LOVE Super Duper Spot to grab a $6 bacon, egg and cheese sandwich and fries.

That said, they're not my go-to for a burger or chicken sandwich.

I just think Polk has a lot of better options for those things (assuming that's what I'm in the mood for).

So, I'm really giving this a three different ranks (for three different items) and rounding it out around 3.5...

Here's a quick breakdown for my quick scanners, though:

  • Fried Chicken Sandwich (3/5): This was, as the kids say .. "Mid". It was fine, but definitely nothing special. I might give them another shot and try "The Dirty Bird", but I wanted to make it a fair rank and go with their "regular" option.
  • Burger (3.5/5): The burger was decent. I'd get it again if I really wanted a burger and I was at The Joinery with a group. That said, I wouldn't go out of my way to get it if I was in the mood for a burger and could choose where I wanted to go for one in Lakeland and/or Polk.
  • French Fries (3/5): The fries follow the same trend here. They're fine. Nothing special. If I don't reach over to finish off Katie's fries, that usually means they're nothing to write home about.
  • Bacon, Egg & Cheese Sandwich (5/5): I know this isn't technically what we're reviewing, but it's an extra here that I need to highlight. $6 for a bacon, egg and cheese that tastes damn good, and this is the spotlight of the menu.

Everything was a 3-3.5 for me, but the BEC Sandwich being there all day at $6 is a 5/5 for me and bumps this up to a 3.5/5 for Taste.

📍 Vibes: 4/5

The Vibes at Super Duper Spot are a solid 4/5.

Being inside The Joinery, right outside of Downtown Lakeland, automatically make the location itself rank higher than most places.

The hospitality/service is decent, but generally hit or miss depending on when you go; but not enough to give a 5/5 like we're at Haven Coffee or Lovebird or something (where you know they're trained extremely well and the people will always be amazing).

Remember, Vibes are ranked on:

  1. The Physical Location
  2. Hospitality/Service
  3. The Interior/Space

The interior space is obviously great inside The Joinery, which gives us a decent 2/3 here.

Plus, the service/hospitality has never been "bad"; which makes this an easy 4/5 overall for Vibes.

💰 Value: 3/5

The value here is a little harder to rank.

The burgers range from $9-13 and chicken sandwiches from $10-12, which isn't bad.

Plus, you know the highlight for me is the bacon, egg and cheese sandwich at $6, so how can I complain?

Well, the problem is the fry combo tacks on $4 and the meal combo (fries and a drink) tacks on $7.

Fries for $3 and drink for $2-3, I guess — but $4/$7 just feels steep to me; especially when I'm ranking the taste 3.5/5 and saying the burger, chicken sandwich and fries are all "mid".

That said, you could disagree with me on those prices (though I personally think most of the prices in The Joinery feel pretty steep); and value could easily jump to 3.5-4/5 instead.

🏆 Overall: 3.5/5

Super Duper Spot gets a 3.5/5 overall, but if you're going for the bacon, egg and cheese sandwich, I'd easily bump this up to a 4.5-5/5.

And that's not a joke...

There are better options for burgers and chicken sandwiches in Lakeland (and Polk); but not many places you can grab a BEC for $6 while hanging at a spot with good vibes like The Joinery.

Would I bring my visiting family there?

It's in The Joinery, so yes.

I will definitely be grabbing more bacon, egg and cheese sandwiches at random hours of the day while visiting The Joinery — and chances are that'll be with my family as well.

That said, I won't be going out of my way to grab a burger or chicken sandwich there, which is part of the core of this ranking.

Here’s how I’d sum up Super Duper Spot:

For me .. there is a secret item on the menu that changes this from a burger or chicken sandwich destination...

The real move is the bacon, egg and cheese. It's $6, it's available all day, and it's the one thing on the menu I'd actually go out of my way for.

If you're set on a burger, it'll get the job done.

If you're getting chicken, skip the plain fried chicken sandwich and try something with a little more going on, like The Dirty Bird or the Angry Bird.

The fries are just fries, so don't expect them to carry the meal.
