Polk County ranks in the top five fastest-growing metro areas in the entire country.

In the twelve months ending July 2025, the Lakeland-Winter Haven metro area ranked #4 nationally for population growth.

More than 23,000 people moved here in that single year.

That's a 2.7% growth rate, according to the U.S. Census Bureau's newest population estimates, released in May 2026.

The Lakeland-Winter Haven metro area is Polk County.

Same boundary, same population, just a different name on the Census report.

So when the Census says the metro is booming, they're talking about us.

The City Actually Leading The Growth

Here's the twist. It's not Lakeland.

Haines City posted 10.0% growth, jumping to 45,973 residents.

That ranks it #6 nationally among individual cities for percent growth.

It's also the only city in Florida to crack the nation's top 15 fastest-growing places.

Lakeland is bigger. Lakeland gets more attention.

And Lakeland has spent years as one of the fastest-growing cities in the country in its own right. But Haines City is the one outpacing it right now.

This Isn't New. Polk Has Been Doing This For Years.

If this feels like a sudden boom, it isn't.

Polk County has been near the top of national growth rankings since the pandemic hit.

Back in 2021, the New York Times broke down Census data and found Lakeland-Winter Haven tied with Boise, Idaho for the 2nd fastest-growing metro area in the entire country.

Only Austin grew faster.

In 2023, LendingTree ranked Lakeland the 3rd biggest "boomtown" in America, based on business and population growth combined.

That same year, a separate study from Quicken Loans ranked Winter Haven 3rd nationally among fastest-growing U.S. cities.

In 2024, Census data showed Lakeland-Winter Haven as the second fastest-growing metro area in Florida, behind only Wildwood-The Villages.

Axios ran a feature that year calling Lakeland the fastest-growing metro in the country.

In 2025, a moveBuddha analysis of a full decade of Census data named Lakeland the fastest-growing "boomtown" in the U.S.

The number: 34.4% population growth between 2014 and 2024.

Five years. Five different studies. Same result every time.

Why This Matters

Polk County isn't growing because of one city, or one good year.

Affordability is a big part of it.

So is location, sitting right between Tampa and Orlando.

Add in new construction and new jobs in manufacturing and logistics, and you get a housing market that still costs less than the coasts while offering more reasons to actually live here.

Haines City fits that pattern.

It sits along the growth corridor between Lakeland and Orlando, absorbing new subdivisions and commercial development.

It's still early enough in its growth curve that most of the region hasn't caught on yet.

If you've noticed more traffic, more rooftops, and more new faces around Polk County, the numbers back it up.

We've been the fastest-growing corner of Florida for half a decade.

And we're still #4 in the country.
