U-Haul just released its 2026 Midyear Migration Trends report.
It tracks every one-way truck, trailer, and U-Box rental in the country over a 52-week span, from July 2025 through June 2026.
The report sorts moves by generation.
Baby Boomers. Gen X. Millennials. Gen Z.
Then it ranks destinations by net gain for each group, city by city.
Most migration data lumps everyone together.
This report doesn't.
And when you filter it down to people leaving Tampa, one destination keeps showing up near the top of the list. Again and again. Across generations.
It's the Lakeland-Winter Haven metro.
Baby Boomers leaving Tampa.
Lakeland-Winter Haven is the #1 net-gain destination. Not Asheville. Not Greenville. Not even Gainesville-Ocala, which came in second.
Gen X leaving Tampa.
Lakeland-Winter Haven ranks #2, just behind Miami. It edged out Norfolk, Washington D.C., and Port St. Lucie for the spot.
Millennials leaving Tampa.
Lakeland-Winter Haven lands at #4, behind North Port-Sarasota-Bradenton, Orlando, and Port Charlotte. Still a top-5 finish.

Three different generations. Three different life stages. Three different reasons to move. All three point to the same metro.
That's not a coincidence. It's a pattern.
And it's one more data point in a trend Polk County residents already feel every day: more moving trucks on the road, more new neighbors, more growth headed this way.
